Katherine Thomson’s Diving for Pearls is now touring Australia as the first major production of this historic award-winning play since 2001. Hailed as “One of the ten best plays in the country” by Time Out, Diving for Pearls is a stunning production about an Australian industrial community on the cusp of change.
Shy union member Den is trying to speak up against his steel factory’s threatened closure. His feisty girlfriend Barbara is on an often humorous journey to reinvent herself as a glossy hotel hostess. A secret daughter, righteous sister and pompous brother-in-law are set to tip the balance of their delicate relationship. What does the future hold for the couple and their community?
The cast is headed by Kevin Harrington (Neighbours, SeaChange, The Dish and Underbelly), who is shortly starring as Cliff Young in ABC telemovie Cliffy. Green Room Award-winning director Denis Moore also played Ron for the Melbourne Theatre Company’s 1991 premiere. Diving for Pearls will tour in 2012 to capital city, metropolitan, regional and remote theatre venues throughout Australia.
